Disco 4 whining noise from the gearbox area and I’m hoping it’s not the torque converter on its way out
I’ve been running a 2014 Discovery 4 for the family duties and weekend desert trips for about two years now and it’s been a pretty solid truck aside from the usual Land Rover quirks like the occasional air suspension gremlin and a tailgate that sometimes needs a firm hand, but over the last month there’s this high pitched whine that’s started coming from somewhere around the transmission tunnel and it’s most noticeable when I’m cruising at a steady eighty or ninety on the Sharjah ring road and it changes pitch slightly when I lift off the throttle which makes me think it’s something inside the ZF six speed rather than a wheel bearing or a diff issue. My regular mechanic in Abu Shagara took it for a drive and said it could be the torque converter starting to fail or maybe the pump wearing out but he admitted he doesn’t have the proper ZF diagnostic gear to really pinpoint it without dropping the box and having a look inside which is obviously a big job and not something I want to do on a hunch. I’ve been searching around and there’s a few places that advertise themselves as Land Rover Transmission Specialists Sharjah and they seem to have the proper equipment to read the transmission control module and check the fluid condition and pressure without just guessing and throwing parts at the problem, which is exactly what I need because I don’t want to spend thousands on a rebuild if it’s just a blocked filter or something simple. Anyone on here had a similar whine on their D4 or RRS and managed to get it diagnosed properly in Sharjah before it turned into a full gearbox failure on the way to Al Ain with a car full of kids?
